Fractal Serpents
Fractal Serpents is a three-color limited edition screen print based on a fractal motif.
The concept of fractals as such was not known in Escher's time.
However, Escher's "infinity limit" drawings exhibit the sort of self similarity
that marks fractals (see, e.g. "Heaven and Hell" of 1960, "Square Limit" of 1964,
and "Circle Limit III" of 1959). In contrast to Escher's designs, in which the
motifs only become infinitesimally small at the perimeter, such points are
distributed throughout the design in "Fractal Serpents". The design can be seen as
a finite portion of an infinitely large tessellation. Fractal Serpents was created in 1994.
