Scorpion, Diamondback, and Phoenix

"Scorpion, Diamondback, and Phoenix" is a four-color serigraph completed in August of 1993, as a limited edition of 48 prints. The underlying design is based on the famous Penrose tiles, which only form nonrepeating patterns. Penrose tiles were discovered around the time of Escher's death, and were hence unknown to him. Prof. Roger Penrose himself also made an Eschereque design based on these tiles, with a chicken motif. It can be seen in an excellent article by Martin Gardner in Scientific American magazine (January, 1977 issue). The design shown here could be extended to cover the infinite mathematical plane.

Art screen print with an Escher-like Penrose tiling, with scorpions, rattlesnakes, and Phoenix birds.
