Brent Collins
Brent Collins is a sculptor living in Gower, Missouri. His abstract sculpture depicts mathematical objects such as minimal energy surfaces, Moebius bands, and ribbons laid over spheres. For some of his more mathematically sophisticated pieces, he works with computer scientist Carlo Sequin, who models the three dimensional objects. Brent creates his works by cutting layers of wood and then gluing them together to build up a rough version of the sculpture. He then meticulously sands down this structure to achieve the final wood master. He has been working with a foundry in Oregon to make bronze castings of these wood masters. Brent's work was profiled in the "Mathematical Recreations" section of "Scientific American" magazine in February of 2000.
