Fractal Masks

The woodcut is the printing technique Escher employed most often. The concept of fractals as such was not known in Escher's time; however, Escher's "infinity limit" drawings exhibit the sort of self similarity that characterizes fractals (see, e.g. "Heaven and Hell" of 1960, "Square Limit" of 1964, and "Circle Limit III" of 1959). As with "Fractal Serpents", "Fractal Masks" can be seen as a finite portion of an infinite tessellation. "Fractal Masks" is a limited edition of 35 woodcut prints, hand printed by the artist in 1995. The image size is 11" x 11".
