Ball of Whacks$29.95 The Ball of Whacks is made up of 30 magnetic design blocks that can be taken apart and rearranged in nearly endless ways. There's no wrong way to play and work with it. It gets your creative juice flowing! The Ball of Whacks comes with a 96-page illustrated book that provides exercises for creative brainstorming and problem-solving. [Add to Cart] [View Cart] |
KnoTiles$14.95 Everyone is familiar with the utilitarian and decorative uses of knots, but mathematicians study knots as well. KnoTilesTM is a puzzle that serves as an introduction to the mathematics of knots and the symmetry of knot designs. All of the knots through seven crossings can be formed with the set, and the instructions contain over a dozen brain teasers. The puzzle pieces feature photographic rope images, with a second color of rope on some pieces to allow the formation of links (like knots, but with more than one strand). 105 cardboard pieces. Grades 3-12. [Add to Cart] [View Cart] |
Pattern Numbers$29.95 This set teaches about the properties of numbers and uses colored tiles to illustrate patterns formed by numbers. Colors indicate which numbers are squares, primes, even numbers that aren't squares, and odd numbers that are composite (not prime). The individual tiles contain information about the number on the tile, including its factors and whether it is a factorial, triangular, Fibonacci, or Catalan number. The tiles are shaped to allow vertical alignment of rows or staggered rows for optimal display of various configurations: counting by different numbers, the multiplication table, Pascal's triangle, triangular numbers, Fibonacci numbers, and more. Contains 186 magnetic foam tiles, color instructions, and eight reproducible worksheets. Grades K-12. [Add to Cart] [View Cart] |

Jumbo 30-sided Dice $1.50 Jumbo rhombic triacontahedral die (30-sided, each face a rhombus). Preferred color can be stated in comments section of order form, but we can't guarantee availability of a specific color. [Add to Cart] [View Cart] |
Hands-on Trigonometry Proofs$24.95 This set contains four separate "proofs" of trigonometry relations, with examples of a Pythagorean identity, a sum formula, a double-angle formula, and two sum-to-product formulas. Demonstration of each relation is accomplished by physically rearranging the pieces to establish equalities of areas or lengths. These are not rigorous mathematical proofs, but rather visual common-sense proofs. As such, they help make these abstract relationships real and believable. By actually handling the pieces, students engage their minds to a greater degree than they would by merely looking at the proofs on paper. The color instructions describe how each proof is demonstrated, and four reproducible worksheets reinforce the material. Contains 20 magnetic foam pieces. Grades 7-12. [Add to Cart] [View Cart] |

The Circles of Descartes poster
$13.95 This poster describes the Descartes Circle Theorem and shows some of the beautiful and complex figures, known as Apollonian packings, that can be created using the theorem. In the early part of the 17th century, RenŽ Descartes described a simple relationship between the curvatures of four mutually tangent circles. Given the curvatures of three of the circles, it is possible to calculate the curvature of the fourth by a straightforward solution to a quadratic equation. (It may be the coolest thing you'll ever see done with a quadratic equation!) This allows the construction of fascinating figures know as Apollonian packings, in which an infinite number of circles fit inside a large outer circle. In fact, there are many Apollonian packings for which every circle has integer curvature. Some arrangements lead to intriguing number sequences, such as the squares (1, 4, 9, 16, 25 ...). Grades 7-12. 22" x 34". [Add to Cart] [View Cart] |
Algebra II Topics by Design$21.95 By Russel F. Jacobs. New in 2007, "Algebra II Topics by Design" contains 42 activity pages covering topics found in most second-year algebra courses. Concepts covered include exponential and logarithmic equations, summation notation, matrices and determinants, function notation, operations on functions, inverses of functions, and special functions such as absolute value and the greatest integer function.
