Welcome, artists! We look forward to reviewing your artwork for the 2025 Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) Exhibition of Mathematical Art, to be held January 8-11, 2025 in Seattle. For more information on the meeting, please visit the

The conference includes an exhibition of mathematical art. We define visual mathematical art broadly to include not only contemporary fine art, but also works in design, craft, and illustration. The binding principle is that the work is created primarily for visual appreciation, with some mathematical concept residing near its core. Works may include, but are not limited to: basketry, ceramics, computer graphics, drawings, design, furniture, handicrafts, illustrations, jewelry, mechanisms, models, origami, paintings, prints, puzzles, sculptures, and textiles.
The exhibition will be curated by Robert Fathauer, with selections determined by a panel of four jurors. There will be cash awards picked by a panel of judges that is different and independent from the panel of jurors that select the artworks. There will be three awards: a $400 award for best photograph, painting, or print; a second $400 award for best textile, sculpture, or other medium; and a $200 honorable mention award. The judges will base their decisions for awards on five areas: 1) Mathematical depth and sophistication, 2) Craftsmanship, 3) Aesthetic appeal, 4) Originality and innovation, and 5) Overall interest. Artists who have won a Mathematical Art Exhibition Award at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in year N will not be eligible for the $400 awards until the Joint Mathematics Meetings in year N+5. They may, however, display artwork in the intervening years. Honorable Mention awardees are eligible for award consideration in subsequent years.
There is a limit of two submissions per participant. There is a size limit of 24" x 24" (61 cm x 61 cm) for 2D works. There is a size limit for 3D works of 18" (45 cm) on a side.
Images of pieces accepted for the exhibition will be maintained on the 2025 exhibition website.
Review Criteria
Review criteria include:
1. Mathematical content (This is a mathematically sophisticated audience.)
2. Aesthetic appeal (This is admittedly highly subjective.)
3. Medium (A variety of media will make for a more dynamic exhibit.)
4. Craftsmanship (The level of skill and effort that goes into making an effective presentation of the idea.)
5. Innovation and originality (Pushing mathematical art in new directions.)
6. Artist statement and artwork description (Written statements should be clear and on point.)
Expectations
Artists are strongly encouraged to attend the conference. If for some reason, you are not able to attend, you will be responsible for shipping your artwork to the meeting at your expense. Return shipping will be covered by the meeting, but only within the U.S. Note that there will also be a paper session at the meeting on connections between mathematics and the arts, organized by Karl Kattchee, Douglas Norton, and Anil Venkatesh.
Reduced-rate meeting registration will be available to artists who are not employed as mathematicians. Details on this will be sent later to artists with accepted work.
Please note that artworks should be presented in a manner that would be appropriate for a mainstream art gallery. This is to be contrasted to a poster session or technical illustration look, which most mathematicians are more accustomed to. Requirements and Submission Process
Submissions for the 2025 exhibition will be made on
the submission site.
We have completed a major overhaul to our previous submission site, and all artists will need to make a new account on the new site, unless they already did so for Bridges 2023 or a more recent exhibition. Use the
Sign up button on the front page to do this. A valid email address is required for registration, and this email will be used for all future communications regarding your submissions. Be sure to use an email account that you check regularly! After signing up, a confirmation email will be sent and you should follow the link in that email to enable your account.
After creating your account, you'll be asked to complete an Artist Profile. Here you will enter public-facing information that will appear alongside your published submissions. Note that you may use a different email address here from the one used to set up your account.
Creating and Editing Your Submission
After creating your Artist Profile, click

Add art submission.
Note that required fields will be marked with an asterisk (*). When you are finished, click
Save and continue.” You can go back and edit your submission at any time up until the submission deadline. Note that in your artist statement and artwork description, you may choose a formatting option, including LaTeX (for formatting mathematics).
Image Requirements
You may submit either one or two pieces. Images should be JPEG files with a dimension of at least 1800 pixels and no more than 2400 pixels in the larger direction, RGB format, saved with maximum quality within these constraints. (A thumbnail image will automatically be created from your main image, so there is no longer a need to upload a separate thumbnail image.)
Upon Acceptance and Delivery
To the best of our knowledge at this time, xhibits will open at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, January 8. All the artworks should be hand delivered to the art exhibit area of the exhibit hall between 10 AM and 1 PM on Wednesday. The participants are also responsible for picking up their works at the end of the conference at 2 PM on Saturday and will be expected to assist in set-up and tear-down of the art exhibition as needed. The artworks will not be insured while on display, so the artist assumes all risk for damage or theft. The conference will provide security for all exhibits. Also, please note that only accepted work, as shown in your submission, can be displayed. If you bring any additional artworks or related materials with you, they will not be shown. You will be allowed to set out business cards or a single stack of postcards near your artwork. By November 15, you should have received at least one e-mail from tessellations@cox.net regarding the exhibition. If you haven't, then the e-mail address you provided when you created your submission is not getting mail from this address and you will miss important information.
